INGREDIENTS-
½ cup arhar dal
½ piece grated ginger
½ tsp turmeric powder
½ cup chopped onion
1 medium bay leaf
2 cloves
1 tsp cumin seed
1 medium size tomato chopped
1 green chilli
3-4 cloves crushed garlic
½ tsp red chilli powder
¼ tsp garam masala powder
1 pinch asafoetida
1 tsp dry mango powder
coriander leaves for garnishing
1 tbsp oil
salt to taste
METHOD-
Wash the arhar dal well, pot the dal in a pressure cooker with half of the chopped onion, ginger and pinch of turmeric powder. Cook the dal for 7-8 whistles till the dal is completely cooked and mashed easily. Add water to adjust consistency of the dal. Heat oil in a pan, add bay leaf, cloves and cumin seeds. When the cumin seed splutter, add garlic and saute for 10-12 secs. Add the rest of the chopped onion and fry till light brown. Add green chilies, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder and asafoetida. Saute for a few seconds. Add the chopped tomatoes. Cook the tomatoes until soft and mushy. Pour this tempering in the cooked dal.
